Senior Designer: Moya
How did you come to work at maurices?
I worked with Angela Sawyer, the AVP of Design at Maurices at both JC Penney and Fashion Bug so it seemed a natural transition to come here. I initially free lanced for 5 months before I joined the company full time.
Did you always know y0u wanted to be a designer?
No, strangely enough. I went through phases of wanting to be an archaeologist, then a costumer/ set designer before arriving at clothing when I was in college.
How would you describe your fashion style?
A uniform of black with the emphasis on dramatic accessories. I have a vast collection of shawls and always wear silver jewelry.
What music gets you going?
I have very eclectic musical taste! I love medieval and renaissance religious music such as Palestrina and Monteverdi. I also love Gregorian chant. But it doesn’t end there! I have a secret passion for Def Leppard and White Snake cranked up to ear-splitting levels in the car!
Where do you love traveling for your job? Or traveling for personal?
For my job? New York. I love how high energy it is and the restaurants are terrific. Travel for personal? 2 years ago I had the privilege of going to Africa – it doesn’t get any better than being charged by a bull elephant!
Favorite fall/winter trend?
There is a wonderful Russian/ Balkans trend that is hovering on the horizon, very rich and ornate with an emphasis on folkloric pattern and tapestry. There is a lot of printing with metallic foil on sweaters happening as part of this trend – I love the effect of molten metal it achieves, very rich and baroque. It looks like you are wandering through a cathedral in Moscow.
What are your other interests/hobbies?
I collect medical art and enjoy animal photography. I also enjoy the framing process so my walls are looking very crowded at this point!
I like to do floral arrangements and collect Christmas ornaments. I also have a passion for popup books!
What’s on your bucket list?
To visit India, go on safari again, to have a pop-up Christmas ornament and floral shop sometime in the future.
Tell us a little about your day-to-day job.
Now that’s difficult! It can range from fittings to product development meetings to sketching sweaters for the line. There can be a lot of e-mails with the overseas offices in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Korea to get information which helps in the product development process. It involves presentations to and working with the buying team to achieve the best assortment.
It also involves preparing tech packages which is the way we communicate what we want with Asia to get the samples we want.
Reading anything good these days?
I have just finished “The Seven Story Mountain” by Thomas Merton which stretches the mind.
I have also finished “Revenge Wears Prada”, the sequel to “The Devil Wears Prada”, which is bubblegum for the brain……
