Hey Everyone! I am so excited I had the opportunity to interview one of my FAVORITE maurices Models, Sarah Slick! She is so cool and down to earth, and so inspirational!
How long have you been a model and what was your inspiration?
I have been modeling for almost 10 years, full time for 4 years. My parents had been approached a couple of times by agents at malls and other various places when I was around 11-13. So, for pretty much as long as I can remember I had it in the back of my mind. Once puberty really hit though I thought well, that’s that, I’ve got curves now and I no longer look like the models in the magazines. So I kind of wrote it off which was disappointing. Then in the late 90′s plus size modeling started to take off in a big way. Models like Emme, Kate Dillion, and Crystal Renn, started making headlines and landing covers and editorial spreads and I began to wonder again if could actually still achieve my dream. It was a huge inspiration to see those girls in my late teens, they really helped me gain my confidence to go out and purse this career!
What is your favorite look? (Casual? Denim? Dressy)
I’d say I have a pretty classic and simple kind of style. I’m really in to Maxi dresses and comfortable but still pulled together looks at the moment. I don’t wear heels or makeup in my daily life but I do quite enjoy getting all dressed up on occasion.
Is there something you like best about maurices clothing? (if you don’t like it – you won’t hurt our feelings!)
Style, affordability, and accessibility! I grew up with Maurices! I lived in a small town about an hour north of Minneapolis, MN and for a long time Maurices was the only store we could go to that had cute and stylish clothes. I love that about Maurices they truly make style and fashion accessible to all of America! I’m so proud to represent such a great company that helped me feel good and confident about myself when I was growing up!
What is your favorite way to relax?
Relaxing for me usually involves heading down to the beach with my boyfriend Cameron. We are lucky enough to live 2 blocks from the ocean in LA so whenever we have free time together you can usually find us at the beach! After growing up in the brutal winters and hot summers of Minnesota its still such a treat everyday, even after 2 years!
What is it like to be a model? What’s a day in your life like? (everyone thinks it’s so glamorous!)
I have to say it’s pretty great! It is a job the same as any other job some days but 99% of the time I feel incredibly lucky to be able to do what I do!
I travel a lot for work so most of my work days are spent in airports and in strange cities which is both exciting and lonely. I love that everyday is a new adventure! I get to work with new people all the time and travel the country and the world which is pretty special!
A typical day for me starts by getting up and exercising for an hour. I love yoga, jogging, strength training, hiking, or taking my boogie board out to ocean and attempting to catch some waves! (Side note: One of the biggest misconceptions about plus size modeling is that we just get to be lazy and eat whatever we want. I wish! Being healthy is very important at any size! I exercise daily, eat right and try like every other woman to maintain my weight!) Then I have a healthy breakfast while I check my email or give my agents a call to see what my schedule looks like. I also spend an hour or two doing some bookkeeping etc. as a model you are pretty much running a small business and unfortunately it’s not all fashion and flashbulbs. Then maybe I’ll have to get ready to go to a casting or pack for an upcoming work trip. If it’s a work day I get up in the morning and go to the hotel gym or do some yoga in my room I try to get in at least 30 minutes, unless my call time is before 7am, I’m NOT a morning person. Then in to a quick shower and off to the shoot! We usually get 10-15 minutes to eat a quick breakfast and then I head right in to hair and makeup. That takes about an hour and then I head over to the styling team to get dressed in my first outfit! Once I’m on set the photographer and art director will usually come over and talk to me a bit about what they are looking for that day and show me some inspiration boards or helpful phases so that I can get in the right mood. Modeling is actually a lot like acting! You have to be able to convey a certain mood, message, or movement. A typical day is 8 hours with a big crew lunch in the middle which is always fun! Every day and every client is different so it’s always fresh and exciting which is one of my favorite parts about this job!
If you could personally inspire a young women -what would you say to her? Or do you have any advice you can give a young woman who is struggling with esteem issues?
To preface, I find that the majority of young women’s self esteem issues (myself included) come from weight/figure so I’m going to answer with that in mind.
I would tell her:
Your life is yours to live!
Please don’t waste any more of your energy and emotion on being negative about yourself!
You have two options and two options only!
Either find the motivation to create the body you want for yourself (whatever size that might be) the right way by changing your bad habits permanently…or…embrace yourself JUST the way you are!
It’s very simple in my opinion. You can spend your life, like most women, hovering and yo-yoing between those two options and torture yourself or you can make a choice! I get so sad seeing how we as women are allowing ourselves to be bombarded by all of this negativity! Don’t participate in it! It is a choice and it’s your choice! Your choice to love yourself no matter what! Your choice to feel confident in your own skin whether you’re a 2 or 22! Try to replace negativity with positivity!
How have you overcome obstacles along the way?
Modeling is a profession based almost completely on appearance and being a plus size woman is, unfortunately, generally frowned upon in our world. It took a good push and a lot of time for me to find the strength and most importantly the confidence in myself to pursue this career! Self doubt and lack of self acceptance was a major obstacle for me but like I said above, I made a choice! I chose to love myself and be confident in my size 16 figure and be proud of it! It wasn’t easy though but then nothing worth doing ever is!
Name 5 things people don’t know about you:
Umm…well lets see…
I have a purple belt in Tae kwon do (someday I’ll get around to getting my black belt)
I am proud to be a vegetarian for over 15 years!
I play the Alto Saxophone and also taught myself to play piano…guitar is next.
I have a BA in Film Studies but secretly love cheesy Rom-Coms and big blockbusters
and lastly…I do still get nervous from time to time in front of the camera, even after all these years!
If you could put together any outfit at maurices what would it look like?
As a model I really need all my clothes to fill two roles. I’m constantly going from one extreme to another and I can only fit so much in a suitcase so I need pieces that are not only super comfy for a long flight but will also work for a nice wrap dinner with the crew! I love all of the pieces in this outfit for that reason! They are super fashionable but still really classic so I’ll be able to wear them for along time plus they can easily be mixed and matched with other pieces!
Every girl needs a cute black blazer! Dress it up or make it super casual with jeans and a t shirt!
#: 89282 one button boyfriend blazer
Great pair of classic dark denim with a slight bootcut, you’ll wear these jeans for years and they are super comfortable! Perfect jean!
in store style #: 86696, silver suki dark wash
I love this flutter top for plus girls! Such a cute shirt, great color options and the detail is wonderful, plus it shows your figure with out being too tight!

These are a great pair of booties, really fun detail, just the right amount of edgy and bonus: they are a wedge so you get the extra height without losing comfortable and stability! They would be awesome with denim or a dress with some dark tights!

Perfect bag, tons of storage, great color, super stylish and I love that you can carry it a number of different ways! Cross body, by handle, or folded! Again, you’ll have this one for years and it will go with everything! Don’t be afraid to pair it with black or color!

I think this ladybug ring is pretty cute and whimsical and it’s a great subtle pop of color!
